I have an old phat anyway since i didnt like the slim when it came out, but due to the lack of stores in my area selling extra components I never saw one of those and never bothered with a HDD for it. Anyway seems like you got a good deal from your friend actually. Now you need to go out and get a plug-and-play modchip going so you can play some good old fashion backups Memor32 + Freemcboot is nice if you go for it. Plus if you have the phat you can get HDLoader installed which might be another option for you if you prefer to not use physical media on it.
